SEO Insights Infographic

Had a prospective client who did not understand why their once heavily-trafficked, search engine optimized website no longer had the volume they were once used to.

After an underlying e-commerce upgrade, they did everything right with their SEO changes: 301 redirect to more search engine friendly URLs; canonical tags for all their duplicate content; tighter coupling of the social media community; etc.

I created this infographic to help them understand what was really going on:

Is Your Website Mobile Ready?

Here are some tools to ensure your website is mobile ready:

Emulators

Dotmobi
emulator.mtld.mobi/emulator.php

I like the visual (albeit the vertical scroll does not work very well), but it only provides an emulator for a Nokia N70 and a Sony Ericsson K750.  Here is a screenshot of my website (obviously not mobile ready):

Mobile

A touchscreen emulator:

Opera

opera.com/mobile/demo

Probably one of the best emulators to test usability and sample flow.  Somewhat awkward from your actual mobile touchscreen, but gives a good-enough feel that you can make certain design decisions from:

Touch

Validators

Of course, there is one from the dotMobi family:

Mobiready
mobiready.com

Well rounded and detailed, not a huge fan of the emulator though:

Tests
The 'additional tests' section is useful and may indicate something that you have not considered yet - worth checking out.

One of my favorite resources:

W3c
validator.w3.org/mobile

W3C mobileOK Checker v1.4.2 has it all for a free resource:

Score

Features:

  • Scoring Overview, good for quick view and industry comparisons
  • Page size and Network usage, a must-have for working within bandwidth limitations
  • Detailed report, access to W3C's mobile basic standards
  • Scripting, to ensure the right code is being analyzed

Other

Another service from dotMobi is Mowser:

Mowser
mowser.com

Mowser converts the browser experience from PC to mobile.  For a quick glimpse, this site does a terrific job - nice n' neat stack.  The tip here is to view source, copy and save it locally, tweak it to visualize the possibilities (obviously some fundamental understanding of HTML and CSS is required), and then view the changes.
